How did you guys get started?

After watching countless kids carrying their possessions in ripped trash bags, Scot and Jacq formed State - a company that promises to not only deliver much needed supplies, but to also provide youth with the tools to reach their fullest potential and better their communities. And to always have their backs.

Who are Scot + Jacq?

State began as a partnership between husband and wife team, Scot and Jacq Tatelman. They created State as a for-profit company with a non-profit pedigree.

These Brooklyn-based social entrepreneurs have eyes trained for style but their hearts have always been with kids growing up in America's most underfunded, often overlooked neighborhoods.

In 2009, they founded Camp Power and its parent organization, Country Roads Foundation - a non-profit organization that has served thousands of New York City kids with life-changing camp experiences and year-round programming.

What is your typical bag size?

We pride ourselves on having a style for everyone, so our bags come in a wide range of sizes. Every product page has a “Size & Materials” section as you scroll down. We also created a “Size Guide” which is linked on every product page, so you can easily see which style and size is right for you!

What bags fit laptops?

We offer several bags that fit laptops! If you’re viewing a product page, you can find this information in the “What Fits” section as you scroll down the page.

If you’d like to search for a bag that fits a specific laptop size, use the “Features” filter on any product listing page and select either 13” or 15” laptop.

Do your bags have built-in laptop and/or iPad sleeves?

Many of our bags come with interior laptop sleeves built into the design. To browse them, use the “Features” filter on any product listing page and select “Padded Laptop Sleeve” in the dropdown. Our laptop sleeves will accommodate iPads of all sizes.

How can I personalize or customize my bag?

Click “Personalize” in the top navigation bar anywhere throughout the site, and you’ll reach the bag styles that can be personalized to your liking.

After you’ve selected your bag, click on “Personalize Your Bag” to get started. Our customization tool will popup and guide you through the options available for that specific product.

Make it yours by adding up to 6 letters of custom text (including a heart symbol) embroidered in a variety of colors and fonts. You can also add embroidered symbols, patches (to be sewn-on by you) and pins galore! Depending on size and surface area, bags will vary in terms of the personalization features available.

Please note that Personalization is provided at an additional cost, which you’ll see listed per feature. All personalized products are final sale.

Are your bags made in the United States?

Our bags are currently made in China under fair and ethical working conditions.

Are your bags eco-friendly?

All of our products are made with non-toxic materials that comply with US testing regulations. Although not fully eco-friendly, it's our company mission to be sustainable by 2025.

Which of your bags are vegan?
We offer a variety of vegan bags. To see if the bag you like is vegan, simply click into your desired product and scroll down to the "Size and Materials" section.
Are any of your bags water resistant?
Most of our bags are water resistant, but not completely water-proof. We would not recommend staying outside in heavy rainfall. Our most water resistant bags are our Coated Canvas bags.

Is there a warranty on your products?

We stand behind the quality of our bags and accessories with a 1-year warranty. This warranty is valid for one year, beginning on the date of purchase from State or one of our authorized retailers. Kindly note, if the product is purchased from an unauthorized or off-price retailer, this will automatically void the warranty.

What is covered under warranty?

If you discover a material or manufacturing defect, we will replace or repair the item at our discretion.

Warranty claims must be accompanied by photos of the bag or item and an acceptable proof of purchase. Acceptable proof of purchase can be your STATE order number, an online order confirmation from STATE or another online retailer, physical store receipt, or banking statement showing the transaction amount and date.

Our warranty does not cover misuse, neglect, accidents, abrasion, color transfer from other materials/garments, solvents, cleaning liquids, or any modification to a State item. Please note that general wear and tear, including but not limited to the reasonable breakdown of colors and materials over time, is not considered a material or manufacturing defect and is therefore not covered by our warranty.

How do I file a warranty claim?
1. Take photographs of the defect, the front of the product, and the back of the product.

2. Submit the photos and acceptable proof of purchase to customerservice@statebags.com with the word “Warranty” in the subject line.

3. We will inspect your photos and confirm if the defect is covered by our warranty. Depending on the severity of the issue, we may provide you with a pre-paid label and ask that you send in your physical bag for assessment.

4. Once you’ve completed the warranty process, we will either send you a replacement or issue you a credit in the form of a digital gift card for the monetary value of the item. *Kindly note, if we no longer carry the bag or accessory, we will provide you with a credit in the form of a digital gift card or an alternative style as a replacement.

All warranty claims are addressed as promptly as possible, with most claims completed within 5 business days. However, during peak retail seasons, such as Holidays and Back-To-School, warranty claims may take an additional 4 to 5 business days. We thank you for your patience!

Can I wash my bag?
Some of our bags are machine washable while for others we recommend spot clean only. Our metallics, for example, should never be machine-washed. To be safe, we recommend checking the care tag located in the main compartment of your bag. Additionally, you can find care instructions for each style on the product pages of our website. If you find that you’re still having trouble, please send us an email at customerservice@statebags.com and we’d be happy to guide you in the right direction!
If I have a patch on my bag, can I wash my bag?
We recommend spot cleaning for your bags with patches applied.
If I cannot wash my bag, can I dry clean it?
Sure! Most styles will be just fine after a gentle dry-clean. However, if you’re at all unsure and want to be safe, please reach out to us first at customerservice@statebags.com.

What are my shipping options?

All orders ship from our warehouse in New Jersey. We offer Fedex Ground, 2-Day and Standard Overnight shipping services. Orders placed after 12PM EST Monday - Friday, will ship on the next business day. Overnight orders placed on Friday before 12PM EST will be delivered on Monday. Overnight orders placed on Friday after 12PM EST will be delivered on Tuesday of the following week.

PLEASE NOTE, EMBROIDERY ORDERS CAN TAKE UP TO 1-3 BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE LEAVING THE WAREHOUSE. Expedited shipping options are unavailable for personalization orders.

Do you offer free shipping?
We offer free shipping on all orders over $100!
Where do you ship?
We ship to all 50 states and are currently working on updating our international shipping! If you run into an issue during checkout, please contact us.
What if I'm having trouble with my shipment?
If you're having trouble receiving your order, please let us know as soon as possible by emailing us at customerservice@statebags.com.

If you see that your FedEx tracking number is pending with no updates, please contact FedEx directly for the most up-to-date information regarding the status of your delivery. FedEx can be reached by phone at 1(800)-463-3339.

If your order is marked as delivered but, you haven't received it yet, please contact us within 2 weeks of the delivery date. If you contact STATE after 2 or more weeks have passed, there's no guarantee we will be able to successfully work with FedEx and/or Route to reship or reimburse you for your order.

International Shipping
State Bags is pleased to ship worldwide through our partner, GlobalShopex.com. Simply add the items you wish to purchase to your shopping cart and choose the "International Checkout" option. The GlobalShopex checkout page will allow you to view the cost of shipping, duties, and taxes upfront.


You have the option to prepay for duties and taxes when you checkout or you can pay upon delivery. If you decide to prepay, there will be no additional funds collected upon delivery. GlobalShopex will process your payment and guarantee delivery.

STANDARD SHIPPING arrives at your address in between 10 to 15 business days. PRIORITY SHIPPING arrives at your address in between 5 to 10 business days.
Can I add a gift message to my order?
Yes, we can add gift messages to gift orders. The gift message will print out on the bottom of the packing slip that arrives inside of the shipping box. Gift messages must be added to the order before it ships. This being said, it's best to send us an email at customerservice@statebags.com immediately after your order has been placed. Be sure to use your order number and the words "gift message" in the subject line of the email. Someone from our STATE Team will reply to your email with a confirmation once the note has been successfully added to the order.

What is your return policy?
Returns and exchanges are free for all US orders. Items must be returned within 14 days of the delivery date. Returned merchandise should be unused, uncompromised, and have the original vendor tags attached.

Please note that personalized bags and final sale items are final sale and cannot be returned.

Refunds will be credited to the original form of payment, including gift cards and vouchers. Kindly note, expedited shipping and handling charges are non-refundable.Once processed, refunds can take anywhere from 1-5 business days for your bank to fully process.
How do I return my bag?
To begin the returns process, please go to returns.statebags.com and enter the same e-mail address used to place your order. Once you do this, you’ll be directed to the STATE Bags Return Center where you'll choose the reason for return and receive the link to download your return label. If you run into trouble, please contact us at customerservice@statebags.com.
How do I exchange my bag?
Visit our State Bags Return Center (returns.statebags.com). From there, you can process a return of your original order and use your instant credit voucher towards a new bag purchase. Once you complete your new order using the instant credit, you can return your original order to us. You can also choose to return your original order for a refund and place a new, separate order for another item. If you run into trouble, please contact us at customerservice@statebags.com
Do you price match?
If the price of an item that you have purchased drops within 14 days of your order, and the item you ordered is still in stock, we can adjust the price for you. To receive a price adjustment, email customerservice@statebags.com within 14 days of your order date and we will refund the difference to your original form of payment or store credit.

Please note that items 70% off and over are Final Sale and cannot be returned.

Where do you give the donated bags?
All across the United States to children and families living in communities of high need. We’ve now donated product in all 50 states through a variety of charitable efforts!
How do you decide where they'll go?
Our model of supporting children, families and communities in need… in the ways they need it most allows us to work with partners in a variety of ways and different initiatives. We support schools and organizations serving populations of high need, first listening to how we can support them - whether it be donated backpacks through our bag drop rallies, fueling their efforts with our funds and resources and/or using our #WhatDoWeTellTheKids platform to shed light on a socially unjust issue they are fighting to curb.
What makes STATE different than other buy one, give one companies?
Anyone can simply donate material goods, but what truly sets STATE apart is our signature bag drop rallies. Carried out across the US serving hundreds of thousands of students, these high-energy, motivational events are where the real impact is made. STATE's team of PackMen/Women, DJ's and celebrities lead a program filled with dancing, inspiring messages encouraging kids to beat the odds often stacked up against them, and of course fully-packed, school-ready STATE backpacks.

We are constantly finding ways to support American kids, families and communities of need in a variety of ways. We carry out giving initiatives twelve months a year, fueling the work of schools, organizations and causes in which we so deeply believe.

As State's platform continues to grow, we view it as a responsibility and vehicle to shed light around social injustices happening every day here in the US. In 2016, we launched our #WhatDoWeTellTheKids initiatives, aiming to tackle the most challenging issues of our time by simply asking the question, "what do we tell the kids?"
Who are your PackMen and PackWomen?
Child development specialists, performers and role model figures that have successfully risen from similar communities as the ones we serve. They talk the talk and walk the walk, getting kids inspired, dancing, laughing and learning throughout the bag drop rallies. Their signatures are on every bag we donate - both figuratively and literally (kids ask for their autographs at the end of each bag drop event)!
Why is the model geared specifically towards kids living in the US?
After seeing kids carrying their possessions in ripped garbage bags at their non-profit summer camp, our Co-Founders, Scot and Jacq wanted to do more for local kids in challenging situations. While other companies were doing fantastic work for people overseas, they wanted to take the one-for-one model back to the US as they were witnesses to how high the need was right here in our own backyard.
Is this a nation-wide program or just New York?
Nationwide! We’ve donated tens of thousands of backpacks to kids in need all across the US… and aren’t stopping anytime soon!
How can I get involved with STATE's GiveBackPack Program?
State is a for profit company with non-profit pedigree, so the more bags we sell means more giving initiatives we can carry out. The best way to be part of our #GiveBackPACK is to either buy a bag for you, your kids, or whoever which in turn will fuel our efforts in supporting more and more local kids in need.
