It’s been two months since we officially launched STATE Bags. The ride has already been incredible with many highs and a few lows, but days like this past Tuesday make each stressful moment and bump in the road 100% worth it.
A fundamental goal of ours from the very beginning was to target communities in very high need across the country, and not only provide brand new backpacks to kids, but also give them a boost of confidence and sense of self-worth.
On Tuesday, March 12th, the STATE Team took to a neighborhood devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Thanks to the many purchasers of our STATE Bags collection, we were able to hand-deliver 65 bags to the students of PS 317 in Rockaway Park, making our total donation amount in 2 months, 165 bags!
The destruction in the neighborhood has been well-publicized, but until you see it first-hand and hear the stories from the voices of 8 and 9 year olds, it’s difficult to truly grasp.
Hearing the tales of how many of their homes were destroyed either by flood or fire, forcing them into displacement (even to this day, 5 months after the storm) was heart-wrenching.
When we came into the school, our mission was to successfully execute our GiveBackPack program run by role-model figures such as the STATE PackMen. The program sets out to teach them lessons about themselves and the art of giving back…but most importantly, bring smiles and laughter.
Mission accomplished.
We are so thankful and proud to be able to work with schools such as PS 317 whose students and staff showed us that carrying courage, perseverance, hope and love in your bag is really all you need.
