America, the land of the free, has earned a disturbing distinction - the world’s leading jailer. Although we represent just 5% of the world’s population, we now hold 25% of its incarcerated people; that's more than 2 million people behind bars. Many the result of extraordinarily harsh mandatory minimum sentences, and racially disparate penalties.
Among the swelling number of incarcerated men and women is a vast number of parents, leaving a devastating, long-lasting toll on kids, families, communities, and ultimately all of us.
We are proud to present our latest #WhatDoWeTellTheKids project that aims to start a conversation around this important issue, support the kids and families impacted by mass incarceration, and spark the empathy and compassion needed to find solutions.
The Multi-Layered Initiative
Echoes of Incarceration is an award-winning initiative driven by youth with incarcerated parents. Having partnered with Sesame Street, The White House and others, the group explores the issue of mass incarceration and its effects on families, creating films and photography told from the life experiences of the creators themselves.
We partnered with the crew from Echoes to showcase their street style photography and videography skills while shedding light on their personal journeys, and mantras.
We transformed their NYC street style shots into beautiful illustrations, created by the incredibly talented, California-based illustrator, Sarah Epperson.
STATE + CHILDREN OF PROMISE + BOMBAS BAG DROP RALLY
As much as we love - and believe in - using our platform to take on tough social issues to spark positive change, we also wanted to simultaneously support kids impacted by mass incarceration through donated product, and our signature bag drop events.
When we embark on a new #WhatDoWeTellTheKids project, we aim to make a bigger impact than simply shedding light. And when we give bags, we go way beyond just shipping product across the country.
So for this initiative, we worked with Children of Promise - whose mission is to embrace children of incarcerated parents - and our great friends at BOMBAS in carrying out one of our epic bag drop rallies in BedStuy.
Here’s just a few shots from a phenomenal day in Brooklyn…
